Whats New in the Basque
Library
By Marcelino Ugalde
The Basque Cataloging Project is running at full
speed now! Since February, the team has cataloged over 3,200
volumes. Of those, 33 percent have been originally cataloged
(i.e., cataloged from scratch, with no on-line
publication information available). It has been a tremendous
effort on the part of the team: Project Director Kathryn
Etcheverria, Amy Coddington, Donna Sciascia, Judy Sokol,
Brigida Cobb, Marcelino Ugalde, and student assistants Lulu
Gabikagojeaskoa, Elena Olsen, Juan Ibarguren and Lisa
Corcostegui. Under the direction of Kathryn, a high quality
of cataloging ahs been maintained along with a high
production rate. The Basque Studies Program staff is
delighted with this progress, as it moves us closer to a
major goal-full cataloging of the library
collection.
Several noteworthy recent additions to the Basque
Library are:
Amerika eta Euskaldunak - America y los
Vascos. 1992 (14 vol. Series)
Behi euskaldun baten memoriak. Bernardo
Atxaga, 1991
Berrogeigarren Mendeko Euskal Liburuen Katalogoa
(1990-1992). Joan Maria Torrealdai,
1993
Blasones y linajes de Euskalerria. Endika de
Mogrobejo, 1991
Euskara, Euskaldunon hizkuntza. Joseba
Intxausti, 1991
Gran cocina navarra: etmografia, historia,
gastronomia. 1992 (3 vols.)
Mujeres y nacionalismo vasco: genesis y desarrollo
de emakume abertzale batza (1906-1936). Mercedes Ugalde
Solano, 1993.
Obabakoak. Bernardo Atxaga, 1988 (Basque),
1989 (Spanish), 1992 (English)
Los vascos en México: estudio
biográfico, histórico y
bibliográfico. A. Martinez Salazar and Koldo San
Sebastian, 1992
In April, the Basque Library and the Cataloging
Project had the opportunity to obtain help for four months
from the Job Opportunities in Nevada (JOIN) program. They
provided us with a library assistant trainee, Luz Escobar,
who proved to be a very dedicated and valuable member of the
staff. As a native of Columbia, she brought important
language skills and in return acquired some technical
library skills, such as identifying and verifying catalog
records in the universitys online catalog, the
international PCLC database, and the Bibliografia
Espa¤ola on CD-ROM. Luz was also a key individual in
processing and shelving newly cataloged items. She is missed
by all.
