Two Elderhostels with Basque Themes

The Basque Elderhostel took place June 4-10, 1995, bringing active, interested seniors from all over the country to learn about the “mystery people of Europe.” Instructors this year were Lisa and Enrique Corcostegui, Jose Mallea, and Linda White.

The Corcostegui team presented classes on the Basque language and music as well as a survey of Old World Basque culture. Mallea presented classes on Basque history, mythology, and the aspen carvings by the Basque sheepherders who worked in the American West. Mallea also led a field trip to a sheepherder’s oven in the Sierras. White explained why Euskara is unique and presented three classes on Basque literature.

The University-affiliated Zenbat Gara Cultural Organization dancers also performed for the Elderhostelers, and Lisa Corcostegui gave a special evening program on traditional raiment.

In August 14-18, a special Basque-themed elderhostel program took place for grandparents and grandchildren. The Corcosteguis and Jose Mallea did double duty this year, spreading the message of Basque culture to twice as many folks.
