Highlights

William Douglass has been appointed to the editorial board of the London-based journal Nations and Nationalism.

Joseba Zulaika published the article, “The Anthropologist as Terrorist,” in C. Nordstrom and A. Robben, Fieldwork under Fire (University of California Press, 1995).

Two professors from the Universidad del País Vasco, Montserrat Fonseca (Medical School) and Kepa Altonaga (Biology), spent the fall semester at UNR to study at the Intensive English Language Center. They were recipients of UPV/University Studies Abroad Consortium grants.

William Douglass was named as one of three Nevada “humanists of the year” (1995) by the Nevada Humanities Committee.

The Ahmanson Foundation has provided the Basque Studies Program with an unrestricted grant of $7,500. Eskerrik asko!

Joseba Zulaika is presently teaching a course on Culture and Globalization (Anthro. 460/660).

Sagrario Moran, a doctoral student from the University of Madrid, visited the Basque Studies Program in December to conduct research on the reporting of ETA activities in the French and Spanish press.

At the American Anthropological Association meetings held in Washington, November 13-19, 1995, Joseba Zulaika presented the paper, “’Daddy, Let’s Talk:’ On Being from Here and There.”

In February, André Kirouac of the Centre International du Loisir Culturel de Trois-Pistoles (Quebec, Canada) visited the Basque program to discuss possible research collaboration. The group plans to open the Parc de l’Aventure Basque en Amérique next June, featuring historical exhibits of the Basque influence in that area.

Jose Mallea is teaching Basque History (Hist. 428/628) this semester. His work to record the Basque tree carvings in the West continues.

Joseba Zulaika presented the paper “Killing and Manhood: Soldiers as Initiated Subjects,” at the conference (En)Gendering Violence: Terror, Domination, Recovery, held in Zagreb (Croatia), October 27-28, 1995.

Two Basque language classes are being taught by Linda White for spring semester: Elementary Basque II (Basque 102) and Second-Year Basque (Basque 204).

On September 29, 1995, Jonan Fernández, coordinator of the Basque peace organization Elkarri, visited UNR to present a colloquium on the progress of negotiations for resolution of the Basque conflict.

William Douglass chaired a session during the conference Basques in the Regions of Mexico. He also gave a paper entitled “Studying the Basque Presence in North America” (see article in this issue).

Marcelino Ugalde was hired as the Basque Librarian in November. Ugalde has been caring for the collection as a library assistant since June of 1992. His dedication to Basque culture and commitment to the Basque Library are truly noteworthy and greatly appreciated.

Pauliina Raento, Ph.D. candidate in Basque Studies with an emphasis in geography, presented a speech on “Basque Nationalism and the Territorial Response of Unidad Alavesa in the Basque Country of Spain” as part of the Geography Colloquium series, on February 8, 1996.

Linda White spoke to members of the National Association of Foreign Student Affairs on “The History and Function of the Basque Studies Program” while they toured the Basque Library and Program offices on November 15, 1995.
