Basques in the Mexican
Regions
Scholars from Mexico, Europe, and the U.S. convened
in Reno last December to share their research and opinions
on The Basques in the Mexican Regions, 16th-20th
Centuries. This II International Conference included a
variety of papers on such topics as Basque political and
military figures, cultural contributions, and involvement in
commerce. The conference was sponsored by the Basque Studies
Program and the Instituto de Investigaciones Historicas of
the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México,
with additional support from the University of Nevada, Reno
Graduate School, College of Arts and Science, and Department
of History. Principal organizers Jose Mallea of UNR and
Amaya Garritz Ruiz of UNAM set up a program of five sessions
covering three days, December 6-8, 1995, in the conference
center of the Comstock Hotel.
A welcoming speech by Dr. Robert Hoover, Vice
President for Academic Affairs at UNR, opened the conference
sessions. In addition to those presenting papers, two other
scholars served as session presiders: Prof. Linda
Curcio-Nagy of the UNR History Department, and Sr. D.
José María Basagoiti, President of the Real
Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País,
México.
The first such conference, sponsored by UNAM, was
held in December 1994 in Jalapa, Mexico. The III
International Conference will be convened in Mexico City,
November 13-15, 1996. There are plans to publish the
proceedings from the conferences; information will be
included in a future newsletter.
