Basque Women’s History Project

Woman’s role in history has often been ignored or slighted, much to the detriment of our body of knowledge about the Basques in Nevada dna the American West. Under the leadership of Linda White, assistant oordinator of the UNR Basque Studies Program, and Dr. Jeri Echeverria, chair of the history department at California State University, Fresno, plans are being formulated to prepare a bibliography of resources already available, gather additional data, including oral histories of Basque women, identify potential donors of personal papers and photographs to the Nevada Women’s Archives, and circulate exhibits that depict Basque life in Nevada.

Participants in this project include Bob Blesse, Susan Searcy, and Victoria Yturralde of UNR Special Collections, Jill Berner of the Basque Studies Program, Jeanne Harrah of the University of Nevada Oral History Program, Janet Inda, Gretchen Osa, and Gloria Castillo of the Basque community, Jean Ford and Vikki Ford of the Nevada Women’s History Project.

Inda says, “These [Basque] women in our community can tell priceless, wonderful stories about their years of struggle, and about being Basque in the Nevada of forty or fifty years ago. But Basques have relatives everywhere, so we can’t leave out California and Oregon and Idaho, either.”

Dr. Echeverria feels the project is extremely important. She has been researching Basque hotels in the American West for many years and, as a result of that work, she kkbows how vital the role of Basque women has been during the last century.

White says, “It is only fitting that the Basqye Studies Program be at the forefront of this effort. I encourage all Basque women to give some thought to their personal history and that of their families.”

This dynamic group will be meeting regularly to ensure the success of the project. Questions about the Basque Women’s History Project may be directed to:
