Basque Minister of Education Visits BSP

Inaxio Oliveri Albisu, the Minister of Education (Consejero del Departamento de Educación, Universidades e Investigación), visited the Basque Studies Program May 25-27, 1996. Accompanied by Javier Muniozguren (Viceconsejero), Claudio Saizar (Asistente del Consejero) and Felix M. Goñi, Oliveri toured the sights of the Reno area with Drs. William A. Douglass, Carmelo Urza, and Joseba Zulaika.

Minister Oliveri and his entourage honored the Basque Studies Program at a dinner on May 27th at the Hotel Santa Fe (Reno) where he presented a beautiful silver plaque to the Program and Bill Douglass. The plaque reads:

Eusko Jaurlaritzako Hezkuntza, Univertsitate eta Ikerketa Sailak, Nevadako Renoko Univertsitateko Basque Studies Program deritzonari, eta bereziki zuzendari duen William Douglass Jaunari, Eusko Ikaskuntzen alorrean egin duten lana dela eta, esker ona adieraziz. Reno, 1996ko maiatza. Inaxio Oliveri Albisu, Sailburua.

(The Basque Government’s Department of Education, Universities and Research expresses its appreciation to the Basque Studies Program of the University of Nevada, Reno, and especially to its Coordinator William Douglass for the work they have done in the field of Basque Studies. May 1996, Reno. Inaxio Oliveri Albisu, Minister.)

Dr. Douglass reciprocated with books for the four visitors, specifically Amerikanuak which he co-authored with the late Jon Bilbao.

The plaque will hang in a place of honor in the Basque Studies Program.
