Whiskey Creek
Project
Last August Dr. Jose Mallea presented a project to
North American Basque Organization (NABO) representatives
assembled in Gooding, Idaho. He showed videos of the Whiskey
Creek Sheep Camp, its sheepherders oven, and the two
log cabins that still stand on the property. The sheep camp
is a protected site under the auspices of the National
Register of Historic Places, but the cabins are in need of
repair. Dr. Mallea proposed that a volunteer project be
coordinated with the Tahoe National Forest that would allow
interested participants to help with the camp upkeep. The
idea was well received, and NABO offered its endorsement. A
summer weekend will be selected for the project. Volunteers
must be able to walk for 3.5 hours while carrying a pack.
The trail up the mountain is 7 steep miles. Workers will be
using axes, picks, and shovels, and may have to supply their
own tools.
If the description of the task has not deterred you,
your reward will be a day among tall pines in the splendid
Granite Chief Wilderness Area. You will breathe the fresh
air found only above 8000 feet, and your labors will be
accompanied by the music of the nearby trout creek.
Furthermore, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that
you have contributed to the preservation of a historical
site that holds great meaning for the Basque community. One
former sheepherder from Winnemucca, Nevada said, This
place is sacred for us, as much as the gravesites are for
the Native Americans.
Anyone interested in participating should call the
Basque Studies Program at (702) 784-4854 or email us at
basque@unr.edu. Please mention the Whiskey Creek project
when you call. Leave us your name and telephone number (or
some other means of contact), and you will be notified once
a date for the project has been set.
