Highlights
Linda White published a review of Rima de
Vallbonas Vida I sucesos de las Monja Alférez
(Tempe: Center for Latin American Studies, 1992). The
review, La vida de Catalina de Erauso, appeared
in Confluencia: Revista Hispánica de Cultura y
Literatura (Fall 1996, v.12, #1).
Joseba Zulaika published two books while doing
fieldwork on Bilbao: Del cromañon al carnaval: los
vascos como museo antropológico (San
Sebastián: Erein, 1996) and Crónica de una
seducción: el Museo Guggenheim-Bilbao (Madrid: Nerea,
1997).
Marie-Pierre Arrizabalaga, who taught for the
University Studies Abroad Consortium in Pau, France from
1991-1997, accepted a teaching position at the University of
Cergy Pontoise in Paris. She will be teaching U.S. and
British history in English. Zorionak,

Basque Borderland: A Geographers
Perspective was the title of a talk presented by Pauliina Raento of the University of Helsinki. Dr. Raento
presented her lecture on March 26, 1997 at the University of
Nevada, Reno.
Linda White spoke to the Nevada Womens History
group on Reading Between the Lines: Linking
Nevadas Basque Women with Their Own Old World
Counterparts on September 12,
1997.
Joseba Zulaika is teaching Old World Basque Culture
(Anthropology 466/666) this fall.
Jose Mallea is offering Basque History (History
428/628) to a class of 18 students.
Linda White is teaching Basque 203 (Second Year
Basque) and Basque Literature in Translation (Basque
451/651). In addition, Dr. White is teaching an Independent
Study (FLL 295b).
On March 15, Linda White presented a talk to
Eldercollege on Basque literature and
language.
Basque 102 students Rhina Guidos and Dena Babbs
received achievement awards for their outstanding progress
in the Basque language at the Foreign Languages and
Literatures awards ceremony on May 2. The award consisted of
certificates and copies of Mariasun Landas bilingual
childrens books Karmentxu and the Little Ghost and The
Dancing Flea. Zorionak!
Joseba Zulaika gave a lecture on September 10, 1996
during his sabbatical as part of the
Mundialización y periferías
seminar (VI Seminario Internacional de Análisis de
Tendencias, held in San Sebastián on September 8-12).
The lecture was entitled
Ruinas/Peripheries/Transizioak. Dr. Zulaika also
participated in the seminar Round Table discussion on
September 11.
In April, Marcelino Ugalde gave a presentaion and
cooking demonstration on Basque cuisine to an ElderCollege
group of the University of Nevadas Division of
Continuing Education.
Marcelino Ugalde attended the Association of College
and Research Libraries Western European Specislists Section program on European Links: Sources
of Information in Western European Studies for Academic
Libraries, in addition to the American Library
Associations annual conference in San Francisco in
June.
During this fall semester, Marcelino Ugalde is teaching
Basque Country Cooking: Classic and New Basque Cuisine for
Truckee Meadows Community College, the Division of Community
Services.
A paper, La tentacion de la inocencia was
given by Joseba Zulaika at the conference De la
revendication identitaire a la violence politique,
organized by the European Commission, May 30-31,
1997.
Also during his sabbatical in the Basque Country,
Joseba Zulaika gave several lectures at the University of the
Basque Country and Udako Euskal Unibersitatea, at the
campuses of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bilbao and
Pamplona.
The Basque Studies Program again hosted an
Elderhostel program, May 11-17, 1997. Lisa Corcostegui
taught Old World Basque Culture plus Basque music and
language classes. Basque Librarian Marcelino Ugalde gave
classes on Basque cuisine and Basque nationalism, as well as
a demonstration on finding Basque information on the
Internet. History and mythology were taught by Jose Mallea,
who later led a field trip to see Basque sheepherders
ovens and tree carvings in the nearby Sierra. A Basque
dinner with a performance by the Zenbat Gara dancers was
enjoyed by the 44 participants.
The Basque Studies Program web site is proving to be a popular destination on the Internet. Over 6,500
people have stopped in to pick up the latest Basque lessons, or read
newsletters, or find information about the program.
