Visiting Scholars and Scholarly

Thirty-five visitors graced the offices of the Basque

them stayed a few hours or a day, but over half remained to
do research. Their visits lasted from one week to four
months.

May 28, to continue his research on Basque-American authors.
He was the recipient of a grant from the Universidad del

June 17-20. Diez teaches for the University Studies Abroad
Consortium in Bilbao and spent the spring of 1997 on a
faculty exchange at the University of

July 1 to August 31 with her daughter
Paula.
Manuel Benito from the Department of Educational
Sciences at UPV (Bilbao) researched superclassrooms at Reno
from July 13-27.
Jacqueline Urla received a Basque Studies Program
stipend to come to the Basque Library to carry out
bibliographic research for her book on Basque language
revival. Dr. Urla just spent a year with the School of
American Research and has now returned to her position at
the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst.

Filología (Leioa). Her project involved research on
Basque dialects spoken by immigrants to the
U.S.
Gloria Totoricagüena spent a week in the Basque
Library (August 4-11) to work on her dissertation on Basque
ethnonationalism in the diaspora.
Carmen Maganto, a professor of psychology at UPV

Intensive English Language Center. She will be staying until
November 14.

west.
Eighteen other unofficial visitors spent time with us
as well during the last six months. Space is sometimes at a
premium, but we never lack for fascinating
conversation.
