Visiting Scholars and Scholarly Visitors

Thirty-five visitors graced the offices of the Basque Studies Program between March and September of 1997. Some of them stayed a few hours or a day, but over half remained to do research. Their visits lasted from one week to four months.

David Río was in residence from April 23 to May 28, to continue his research on Basque-American authors. He was the recipient of a grant from the Universidad del Pais Vasco (UPV).

Jesus Txurruka stayed for two months (April and May) to study English at the Intensive English Learning Center. Txurruka is a professor with the UPV in Biology.

Jose Miguel “Txemi” Apaolaza spent May 27 to August 10 carrying out research on ikastolas. Dr. Apaolaza is with the Department of Social Anthropology at UPV (Donostia).

Edorta Arana was with us from June 4 to August 17. A professor with Audiovisual Communications and Advertising at UPV, he was studying English at Reno.

Juan Arrieta Ugarte, a professor of inorganic chemistry at UPV, spent June 4 to August 13 studying English. A sports injury forced him to return home a week early.

Ignacio Diez paid a brief visit to the Program from June 17-20. Diez teaches for the University Studies Abroad Consortium in Bilbao and spent the spring of 1997 on a faculty exchange at the University of Idaho.

Marián Martínez de Pancorbo, a professor of cellular biology at UPV (Leioa), visited from July 1 to August 31 with her daughter Paula.

Manuel Benito from the Department of Educational Sciences at UPV (Bilbao) researched superclassrooms at Reno from July 13-27.

Jacqueline Urla received a Basque Studies Program stipend to come to the Basque Library to carry out bibliographic research for her book on Basque language revival. Dr. Urla just spent a year with the School of American Research and has now returned to her position at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Jasone Astola, a professor of law at UPV (Sarriko), spent the month of July in Reno doing research on the U.S. Constitution.

Mari Luz Esteban from the Universidad de Navarra spent July 26 through September 8 at the Basque Library researching women’s studies.

Agurtzane Elordui Urkiza received a Basque Studies Program travel stipend to help defray the costs of her research trip to Reno. She is a professor with the UPV in Filología (Leioa). Her project involved research on Basque dialects spoken by immigrants to the U.S.

Gloria Totoricagüena spent a week in the Basque Library (August 4-11) to work on her dissertation on Basque ethnonationalism in the diaspora.

Carmen Maganto, a professor of psychology at UPV (Donostia) arrived on August 19 to study English at the Intensive English Language Center. She will be staying until November 14.

Mari Carmen Mintegui Diez, an anthropologist with the UPV (Donostia/San Sebastián), will spend September 1 to December 19 as a visiting scholar at the Basque Studies Program.

Javier Diaz Noci arrived on September 8 to research the Basque-language press. He is with the UPV School of Journalism (Leioa) and stayed until September 22.

Miel Angel Elustondo paid a return visit to the program from July 29 to August 15 in order to gather information for several articles on Basques in the west.

Eighteen other unofficial visitors spent time with us as well during the last six months. Space is sometimes at a premium, but we never lack for fascinating conversation.
