Reno’s Basque Sister City

As you may recall from a previous Newsletter article, Reno has a Sister City relationship with San Sebastián (Donosti), in the Basque Country of Spain. This past year presented some opportunities for cultural exchanges among citizens of the two cities. In May, Reno’s Mayor Jeff Griffin was invited to San Sebastián to speak at a conference on Citizens’ Political Involvement. He spoke on the district councils formed in Reno to facilitate citizen input into city government matters. Later in the summer, a girls’ soccer team from Reno, the Silver Wings, traveled to San Sebastián to take part in the Donosti Cup ’97. The Donosti Cup tournament brings together amateur teams from twenty countries for competition.
