Basque Studies Program Newsletter · Issue 56, 1997

Liburutegitik · From the Basque Library
by Marcelino Ugalde

The Basque Studies Program and the University of Nevada Libraries were very excited to see the return of cataloger Kathryn Etcheverria to the Catalog Department. Kathryn rejoined her colleagues in April on a part-time basis with the responsibility of cataloging Basque Library materials. Her services are highly welcomed, as the backlog of materials was beginning to grow out of control. Previously, Ms. Etcheverria directed the two-year cataloging grant project known as the “Basque Studies Collection Cataloging Project,” funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Kathryn was instrumental in the success of the project which surpassed its goal of providing full-level cataloging for 10,000 monographic titles in the Basque Library. In a relatively short time since her return, Kathryn has been impressive with her monthly cataloging productivity levels.

The Basque Studies Program has been accepted into a consortium of institutions in the Basque region of Spain to provide full-text access via CD-ROM to eight Basque newspapers: Egunkaria, El Correo Vasco, Deia, El Diario Vasco, Egin, El Mundo, Diario de Navarra and Diario de Noticias de Navarra. The Basque Library plans to make this information available as soon as the CDs are received.

Recently, the Basque Studies Program and Library received a very generous donation of 400 pounds of serial and monographic duplicates from the library of H.A.B.E., the Basque Autonomous Government’s Basque language teaching agency. We are very appreciative of the response from Basque governmental and provincial agencies to aid Reno in building a comprehensive library collection at the University of Nevada. The shipment included many issues of serial titles which filled gaps in the Basque Library and even more importantly included new serial titles such as: Aretxagazeta, Ere, Lau haizetara, and Udala. Thanks to caring Basque organizations such as H.A.B.E., a sense of cooperation and collaboration is growing in the field of Basque studies.

Following is a short list of Marcelino’s noteworthy new titles in the Basque Library:

]Atxaga, Bernardo. The Lone Man. (Translated from the Spanish version by Margaret Jull Costa). London: Harvill Press, 1996.

“Bostak Bat” Lantaldea. Diccionario 3000 Hiztegia: Euskara-Gaztelania/Gaztelania- Euskara. Bilbao: Adorez 7, 1996.

Los Escritores: Histos de la literatura clásica euskérica. Besaide Bilduma, 7. Vitoria-Gasteiz: Sancho el Sabio Fundazioa, 1996.

Trask, R.L. The History of Basque. London; New York: Routledge, 1997.
