Liburutegitik - From the Basque Library
by Marcelino Ugalde

A newly discovered Spanish Civil War archive from the Basque region in the northern part of the Spanish state was acquired recently by the Basque Studies Library at the University of Nevada,
Reno. It contains more than 5,000 documents, manuscripts, photographs, maps, pamphlets and
artifacts produced by both the Basque and Republican Governments and the Fascist Nationals during the northern front campaign of the Spanish Civil War.

This particular archive, Archivo Guerra Civil &endash; Frente del Norte, was created by Lieutenant José María Huarte Jauregui, the military commandant in Zarautz. Señor Huarte, the historian and archivist for the “Reino de Navarra” collection, developed a great interest in and enthusiasm for establishing an archive representing both opponents of the war after Basque and Republican information was confiscated by Franco’s army, where it took control of the Basque territories of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. Information generated by the Nationalist military administration that occupied the Basque provinces was also important and was added to Huarte’s collection. His archive was roughly organized into two parts, though neither part was compiled with a guide.

Nonetheless, the Basque Studies Library looks forward to identifying, organizing and providing
access to this unique, once unknown archive, many documents of which were used for
intelligence services and espionage. This archive provides information from both perspectives,
the Fascist side and the Republican side, concerning the military situation in Euskadi, the Basque Country. This is its greatest contribution to scholarship.

On a sadder note my valuable assistant, Juan Ibarguren, library assistant for the Basque Studies
Library this past year, left the library at the end of January to take a position with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in the San Diego, California area. He was a very valuable asset to the library and will be missed. All the best to Juan in his new endeavors. Zorionak eta urte askotarako!
