For the Bookshelf
by William A. Douglass

The latest publication of the Basque Series of the University of Nevada Press has something for everyone. Nancy Zubiri’s A Travel Guide to Basque America. Families, Feasts and Festivals (Reno: University of Nevada Press, 1998. 555 pages, $18.95) lives up to its ambitious title. With a fine journalistic eye and appealing writing style, the author takes us on a step-by-step (state-by-state) journey throughout Basque America. At each stop along the way we are entertained and educated with personal anecdotes, fascinating family history, and historical facts. By journey’s end we have a comprehensive view of late twentieth century Basque-American reality, particularly as expressed in its hotels and restaurants, monuments and museums, festivals and dance groups. We also know how to order wines from the Rioja and sign up for a study tour in the Basque country, as well as where to buy the best Basque bread here in the United States. This is a book to savor in your easy chair and to carry in your car’s glove compartment when travelling anywhere in the American West (although there is even a chapter on Basque activities on the East Coast). If you buy it for someone as a Christmas present you had better order two copies since you won’t part with one of them!
