Highlights

In October William Douglass lectured on “Basque Ethnic Identity” at the Basque Cultural Day celebration of the South San Francisco Basque Cultural Center.

“Architecture among Ruins: Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao” was the title of a lecture given by Joseba Zulaika at Wellesley College, Mass., on November 18.

In the November 1998 issue of the Journal of the Society of Basque Studies in America, Linda White published “Echoes and Mirrors: Tricks for Teaching the Basque Verb to English Speakers.”

On February 24, 1999, Marcelino Ugalde gave a presentation on “Pastoralism of Old World Basques and Basque Sheepherders of the American West” to an Anthropology 201 class, “Peoples and Cultures in the World.”

Linda White is teaching Basque 102 this semester.

William Douglass published an entry “Basques” in The New Encyclopedia of the American West (Yale University Press, 1998). He also published a similar entry in American Immigrant Cultures, Builder of a Nation (New York: Macmillan 1998), Volume One.

In December 1998, Marcelino Ugalde attended the “School for Scanning: Issues of Preservation and Access for Paper-based Collections,” a conference presented by the Northeast Document Preservation Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Co-sponsors for the conference were the Getty Information Institute, the Historic New Orleans Collection, the National Parks Service, and SOLINET.

On February 3, Linda White lectured on “Basque Women, Basque Witches: The Female Legacy in Basque Mythology” to a Women’s Studies gathering at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Carmelo Urza, Director of the University Studies Abroad Consortium, was honored at the 18th Annual Basque Hall of Fame held in Bakersfield, California last November. He was praised for his work in establishing the Consortium and serving as a liaison between American Basques and the people of Euskadi.

Joseba Zulaika, with his daughter, Garazi, published the article “Daddy, Let’s Talk,” in the December 1998 issue of Anthropology and Humanism (23:1).

In November William Douglass gave a public lecture on terrorism at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas.

The Basque Studies Program sponsored a lecture in November, “The ‘Sin’ of Essentialism?” by anthropologist Robert Paine, Prof. Emeritus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

On February 10, the topic was “Overcoming All Obstacles” as Linda White spoke to the Getchell Library Writers’ Group. She was invited back on March 10 for part two of the talk.

William Douglass published an article, “William F. Harrah” in The Maverick Spirit. Building the New Nevada (University of Nevada Press).

Joseba Zulaika is researching in Bilbao, in the Basque Country, this semester and teaching two classes for the USAC program there: “Remaking European Postindustrial Cities” and “The Anthropology of Europe: Old Nations and New Identities.”

Iñaki Barcena, a political science professor from the Universidad del País Vasco (Lejona), is in residence at the Basque Studies Program as a visiting professor. He is teaching “Introduction to Basque Institutions, Political Parties, and Social Movements” (PoliSci 439/639) at UNR.

Basque Studies Ph.D. graduates Pauliina Raento and Cameron Watson co-wrote a paper, “Gernika/Guernica: The Politics of Place in a Basque Town,” which was presented by Dr. Raento at the Association of American Geographers’ Political Geography Specialty Group 13th Preconference held in Maui, Hawaii, March 21-23, 1999.

On January 12, 1999, the City Council of Reno gave special recognition to Carmelo Urza, Director of the USAC, for his work on the Mayor’s International Circle which established a sister city relationship with San Sebastián, Spain. Mayor Jeff Griffin read a proclamation thanking him “for his dedication and achievements... and meaningful contributions to the international community.”

On February 27, Joseba Zulaika gave a lecture, “Antropología del discurso terrorista,” in the Jakitez program of the University of the Basque Country (Vitoria).

“Hiri Latza: Gehry eta Bilboren estetika,” by Joseba Zulaika, appeared in Bilbo-Nora zoaz?, a book edited by Iñaki Barcena (University of the Basque Country Press, 1998).
