Liburutegitik · From the Basque Library
by Marcelino Ugalde

Of major concern to the Basque Library is space. All of the Basque collections (books, serials, archives, photographs, vertical file and rare books) have grown significantly over the last few years. Currently, the library is having to stack books on the floor because the shelving is at 100% capacity. Over the last couple of years, the Basque Library has been growing at a rate of approximately 1,400 items yearly due to generous gift acquisitions and consistent materials budgets. It is my goal to continue to collect Basque studies material as aggressively as possible in order to maintain the strongest and most comprehensive Basque collection in the United States. Although it looks as if there will be a new main library in the future which will house both the Basque Studies Program and the Basque Library, a short term answer is needed. Discussions with the main library administration have been frequent regarding short term solutions to the space constraints.

Very soon patrons using the Basque Studies Library will be able to search the Basque vertical file from the Basque Library’s webpage for references to published and unpublished papers, articles about Basques published in foreign and domestic magazines, newspaper clippings, political information, and other ephemeral material. This resource was started by the late Jon Bilbao in the early 1970s and has continued to grow enormously over the years, containing thousands of entries. The file has proved to be an invaluable resource for research, but only now will patrons have remote access to this database with subject, author and title searching capabilities. References also include an accession number to the specific material needed as well as a brief description of the work. The database is almost complete, along with a thesaurus. In addition, it will be updated weekly. Please keep an eye on the Basque Library’s webpage at:

The Basque Library is very pleased to acknowledge the invaluable assistance in the area of collection development for the library from Basque Studies adjunct faculty abroad, Jon Bilbao Saralegui and David Río. Mr. Bilbao, a member of the Confederación Empresarial Vasca-Euskal Entrepresarien Konfederakuntza (Confebask), who participated in the conference on Basques last July, has been instrumental in duplicating the archives of Confebask and sending them to Reno. This material will make a strong contribution to our collection of Basque business and labor information from Euskadi. Mr. Río, a professor of English philology at the University of the Basque Country (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea) in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and who has become a scholar on the literary works of the Basque-American author, Robert Laxalt, selects articles of interest from European periodicals and magazines for the Basque Library’s vertical file. Criteria for selecting information was established by Mr. Ugalde. Efforts from both of these individuals are quite significant in building and maintaining a comprehensive Basque library in the United States. Eskerrik asko laguntzagatik!

The Basque Studies Librarian, Marcelino Ugalde, is planning a visit to the Basque regions of Euskadi, Nafarroa and Iparralde this year to meet with book suppliers, publishers, librarians, Basque University personnel, and to visit information centers and political institutions. Time will also be devoted to research in England at the Public Records Office in Kew, England, and at the Taylor Library at Oxford University as well as visits to the Euskal Etxea in London and to the Txoko Press group.

The following is a short list of Marcelino’s noteworthy new titles in the Basque Studies Library:

Barrenechea, Teresa. The Basque Table: Passionate Home Cooking from One of Europe’s Great Regional Cuisines. Boston: Harvard Common Press, 1998. (An easy-to-follow cookbook with recipes presented as meal courses and good general descriptions. However, there are no pictures.)

Conroy, Joseph F., Aitor Arana & Wim Jansen. Basque-English English-Basque Dictionary and Phrasebook. New York: Hippocrene Books, Inc., 1998. (A small book providing 1) a brief description of the Basque alphabet and pronunciation, 2) a basic overview of Basque grammar, 3) a short bilingual dictionary, and 4) a short phrasebook based upon themes and question words.)

Conversi, Daniele. The Basques, the Catalans and Spain. Reno: University of Nevada Press, 1997. (A sound text on Basque nationalism from its beginnings to the present.)

Encinias, Miguel. Two Lives for Oñate. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1997. (A historical novel about Juan de Oñate and his expedition into New Mexico.)

Girard, Sylvie. Pays basque: Cuisines régionales de France. Amsterdam: Time-Life Books B.V., 1995. (A delightful cookbook with many pictures and some explanations. Recipes are in French.)

Pujana, Juan José & Gentza Belausteguigoitia. Vascos sin fronteras. Erandio: COINPASA, 1997. (A beautiful book on Basque history and culture containing excellent black and white photographs and bilingual text in English and Spanish.)

Reher, David S. Perspectives on the Family in Spain, Past and Present. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1997. (An academic work on the family in Spain, with some Basque comparisons.)

Ross, Angus. The Ampurias Exchange. New York: Walker and Co., 1977. (A novel set in the Basque Country around the theme of political violence.)
