Basque Studies Ph.D. Student Awarded Literary Prize

Javier Cillero Goiriastuena, a Ph.D. student in the Basque Studies Program, recently won a major literary prize in the Basque Country: the annual City of San Sebastián Literary Prize for Basque Theater. His entry was a play entitled “Uztailaren laua, Renon” (The Fourth of July in Reno). One of the judges for the competition described Cillero’s play as “a simple but intense work that tells the story of two people in America, in the city of Reno, Nevada, where there is a considerable settlement of Basque immigrants.”

Cillero, a native of Bilbao in the Basque region of Spain, spent several years at the University of Nevada, Reno as an exchange scholar and graduate student. He currently resides in Geneva, Switzerland where he is preparing his dissertation on Basque literature.

As a first-place winner, Cillero received a trophy and a cash prize of $8,000. Awards were also given for Spanish theater and for Basque and Spanish short stories.
