Liburutegitik · From the Basque Library
by Marcelino Ugalde

The Basque Library is busy adding material to their web site. The works which have been digitized are: La Historia de los Vascongados en el Oeste de los Estados Unidos by Sol Silen, published in 1918, and the Basque periodical, Basques: Bulletin of the Basque Delegation in the U.S.A., published by the Basque Government from New York City, no. 1 (March 1943) to no. 6 (August 1944). Future projects include Archivo Guerra Civil-Frente del Norte and an additional Spanish civil war archive. Further work will be done with the Basque library’s local database by including a reply box and enhanced searching capabilities. Many other digital projects need to be identified and organized to be added to our web site.

The university libraries have provided added space for the Basque Library’s collections and the Basque Studies Program. With the recent relocation of the University Studies Abroad Consortium to the old gym on campus, vacated space in Getchell Library (room 281) will be used by Basque Studies. Remodeling plans for this space are underway. The Basque Library has received additional space (to be shared with Special Collections) adjacent to its current location. It will allow expanding our print and non-print collections. This will ease current space constraints for the next few years.

In June, I made a very busy and productive trip to Euskadi and London, England. My visits included the Sancho el Sabio Library in Gasteiz, the University of Deusto, Urretxindorra Megadenda, Axular Liburudenda, the Catholic Archives for the Diocese of Bizkaia in Bilbao, and Euskadiko Filmategia in Donostia. In addition, I participated in a press conference with Joseba Etxarri and Chris Upchurch to promote the Renoko Aste Nagusia for the Reno Basque Club. The visit to the Catholic Diocese of Bizkaia was made to return some 18th - 20th century archival documents from the Catholic parish of San Pelayo of Bakio, Bizkaia. The auxiliary bishop and his staff were very appreciative and impressed that we were willing to return documents which were purchased in the 1970s by Basque Studies. The travel to London was necessary to identify Basque-related documents found in the Public Records Office and to meet with Basque community representatives regarding the establishment of their Institute of Basque Studies.

The following is a short list of Marcelino’s noteworthy titles in the Basque Studies Library:

Kurlansky, Mark. The Basque History of the World. New York: Walker & Company, 1999.

Laxalt, Robert. A Private War: An American Code Officer in the Belgian Congo. Reno: University of Nevada Press, 1998.
