William Douglass to Retire

In December William Douglass is retiring from his appointment as Director of the Basque Studies Program after 33 years of service. In May he was honored by the University of Nevada, Reno at its Faculty and Staff Annual Awards Ceremony. Douglass was named the Outstanding Researcher of the Year and was also given UNR’s most prestigious Distinguished Faculty Award - one that recognizes a career of extraordinary service by a faculty member to the institution. It was the first time that two such prominent honors have been conferred on a single individual in the same year.

In July, Douglass received additional recognition during Reno’s Aste Nagusia celebration. He was presented with plaques and certificates by Juan Mari Atutxa, President of the Basque Parliament, Robert Echeverria, President of NABO (North American Basque Organization, Inc.), and Kate Camino, President of the Zazpiak Bat Reno Basque Club.

Douglass has also been named a professor emeritus by UNR. He will therefore retain an office at the Basque Studies Program and plans to continue indefinitely with his research and writing. He will also continue as editor of the Basque Book Series of the University of Nevada Press.

Joseba Zulaika was selected by his colleagues to replace Douglass as the Director of the Basque Studies Program for the next three years.
