Liburutegitik - From the Basque Library
by Marcelino Ugalde

Our prayers have finally been answered! The Basque Library has recently increased its overall library space, which has been a goal since 1986. Therefore, during the past three months, the Basque Library has been turned upside down, moving parts of the 41,000 volume book collection to nearby storage, as well as moving the entire journal and periodical collection. The academic center staff have relocated their offices to newly-constructed ones down the hall, which enabled the librarian and his assistant to each have their own office now. In this transition, the library took the opportunity to paint and re-carpet. Additionally, a new public service desk and other furniture have been ordered to improve the environment and better serve our clientele. One major benefit of relocating the Center for Basque Studies was that the library increased its stack space for collections, which was desperately needed since material was being added at a rate of approximately 1,400 items per year. Furthermore, it obtained additional space for processing this material. By the end of June, the library should have most of the stack shifting completed and be fully functional and ready to assist its many summer researchers and visitors.

Brett Copeland, the Library Assistant for the past year and a half, resigned his position effective the end of March to pursue a new career in California. His communication skills, his attention to detail, and his database management skills will be greatly missed. The journal collection, under his direction, was expanded to include over one hundred new titles thanks to his efforts to communicate with Basque municipal publishers. Brett was also instrumental in improving access to these new journal titles, as well as to some older titles by creating order, bibliographic and check-in records in the online catalog. Mr. Copeland will be missed, however we wish him all the best in his new endeavors.

While the librarian is in the middle of hiring a permanent replacement for the Basque Library Assistant, he was very lucky to acquire the services of an emergency hire, Lorenzo Trimble, a native Californian of Basque descent. Although a temporary hire, Lorenzo has already made a positive impact on library services and collections. He is a quick learner, and has brought a sound computer background to his duties along with strong interpersonal skills. It has truly been a pleasure to work with him.
