The Center awards two scholarships annually to incoming freshmen of Basque descent to attend the University of Nevada, Reno. Applicants must register as full-time students at the University, and must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 and demonstrate financial need. The scholarship offers a minimum award of $500 per semester. Applications are available on this site, and from high school scholarship offices within the state of Nevada.
In 1995, a scholarship was established in memory of Dolores Saval Trigero, the daughter of immigrants from the Basque Country in Spain. Born and raised in Nevada, Dolores Trigero displayed a strong interest in her Basque heritage and was a strong advocate of the personal, social, and cultural benefits of a college education. The Dolores Saval Trigero Scholarship is awarded to a Nevada resident of Basque descent, preferably from a rural area of the state.
The Peter Echeverria Scholarship was awarded for the first time during the 20022003 academic year. Peter Echeverria had a distinguished thirty-year legal career in Nevada and also served in the Nevada Senate and on the Nevada Gaming Commission. He was also active in the local Basque community and participated in the 1959 Western Basque Festival serving as one of its principal organizers.
These scholarships were established as memorial funds, and we thank the Echeverria and Trigero families for their generosity and thoughtfulness in designating these funds for the benefit of Basque-American students. Eskerrik asko!

The Begoņa Aretxaga Travel Stipend, in the amount of $1,500, was named in honor of Begoņa Aretxaga, esteemed colleague and Advisory Board member of the Center, who passed away in 2002. The stipends were conceived to facilitate travel for scholars with an interest in Basque studies to come to Reno to conduct research. Preference is given to those whose research projects coincide with the materials available in the Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno.
To apply interested persons should send a research proposal of 1-2 pages to firstname.lastname@example.org by March 15th. Please include Aretxaga Travel Stipend in the subject line. Duration of stay will be determined by the recipient but it is assumed that it will be at least 3 weeks. Typically two stipends are awarded annually but this may vary on resources year to year. For further information please contact the Center.
