The Center for Basque Studies is proud to announce that graduate student and Ph.D. candidate Mariann Vaczi has won the University of Nevada, Reno’s, 2013 Outstanding Graduate Student Researcher Award and the Outstanding International Graduate Student Award. Mariann has been a graduate student and research assistant at the Center since August 2007. After completing her comprehensive exams in Basque Studies and Anthropology in 2009, she won the Ruth Landes Memorial Grant from the Reed Foundation (New York) for her doctoral dissertation on Basque soccer culture. She spent one and a half years in Bilbao between 2010 and 2012 doing ethnographic fieldwork on Athletic Club de Bilbao. She has researched soccer from anthropological and sociological perspectives, including the interfaces of sports with globalization, identity, gender, politics and the media. During her fieldwork, Mariann extensively interviewed fans, players, club leaders and managers for her dissertation, and was often featured by the media as a sports anthropologist. Her research included field trips to Madrid, Barcelona, and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Center is pleased to announce that she will defend her dissertation titled “Sport, Nation, Gender: Soccer Culture among the Basques” on April 22, 2013.
