The valley of Arratia is known for its unique
style of traditional dress and for its distinctive way of doing the popular dance known as
the Jota. We have excellent documentation
regarding the traditional everyday clothing of the region thanks to Eulalia Abaitua, a
photographer who took many photos of the region and its people during the the last part of
the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth.
The torso remains rigid in most Basque dances. The Jota
from Arratia, however, breaks this convention with the upper torso and hips often twisting
in opposition to one another.
