In 1991 Zenbat Gara recreated Basque clothing from the Middle Ages. The
most salient characteristic of this time period is the women's horn-shaped
headdress.
While we have little concrete information
about this type of headdress, we do have images created by several artists of that time
period. Often these artists were travelers recording the local dress they
encountered.
German artist Christoph Weiditz left many
drawings of Basque clothing which were done around 1530. It was from these drawings and
other information that Zenbat Gara reproduced these costumes. Julio Caro Baroja has
also written about this headdress (see bibliography) |
