Rose and Syl Uriguen were both born in the United States to Basque parents. Rose's mother died when she was young and she was raised in a convent. Syl's mother worked in the Telescope and Star hotels in Elko, where he was raised. The Uriguens took over the Martin Hotel in Winnemucca in 1951, where they stayed until 1973.
